2022 NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS - Love Food, Hate Waste

Why not make an environmentally friendly resolution this year? Simply loving your food and cutting down on waste is a terrific way to help the planet, save you money and simply do your bit. Better for you and better for the planet.

We all love food, most people eat at least 3 meals per day and at least a couple of snacks as well. And yet in the UK alone we waste 5 million tonnes of food every year, those 5 million tonnes are enough to fill 40 million wheelie bins. The waste isn’t just food in which we throw out because we haven’t managed to eat it before the use-by-date, it includes the food left on our plate at the end of each meal that we can’t manage to eat up.

We can all make a difference in reducing the amount of food that we throw out each day by following some simple steps.

Here are my top 5 tips:

  1. Make a shopping list every week and plan what meals you intend to make, therefore only buying what you need.

  2. Freeze any food that you haven’t managed to eat. Fruits and veggies freeze well, so do left over meals that you can pop in the freezer to enjoy another day.

  3. Love your left overs by using it to make another meal the following day. For example a few slices of nut roast make a lovely warm ciabatta with some roasted pepper and hummus dolloped on top. Get creative and love your left overs.

  4. Freeze your bread, fresh bread can go stale and mouldy very quickly. A way to prevent this is to freeze the loaf, you can toast bread straight from the freezer or take out a couple of slices and leave to defrost to use for sandwiches.

  5. Use up left over by getting creative. See what foods you have left in the fridge and there’s usually something tasty you can whip up. Whether it’s a tasty sweet treat, snack or meal. This is also a great way to get the kids involved in making your own magic creations!

Wishing you all a fun and fantastic 2022

Big Love
